SOWKSA Urges Liberians to Remain Peaceful During November 14 Run-off Election

Montserrado: As Liberia draws closer to its Run-off election, a student group at the University of Liberia (UL) under the banner Social Work Students Association is rallying Liberians particularly young students to maintain peace and stability in the country.

Liberians are expected to go to the polls on Tuesday 14th November to elect a President and Vice President for the next six years. The candidates in these elections are George Mannah Weah of the Coliation for Democratic Change (CDC) and Amb. Joseph Boakai of the Opposition Unity Party along with their vice presidential candidates.

Speaking at a local press conference on Wednesday November 1,2023, Abdullah Kamara, President of SOWKSA urged on students to remain peaceful and adhere to the rule of law while exercising their Constitutional rights.

He noted that young people must bear in mind that the democracy of Liberia should be cherished in order to ensure a good and safe environment for unborn generations.

“let us not allow political differences to divide us as one people. Let it be known that our country and our identities as people of one nation cannot be altered in any way, let us remember the fact that elections are an eventful practice in democracy that allow citizens to exchange their thoughts and ideas for the future of their Country. So as a social work student and advocate for positive change , we understand the value of inclusive, democratic processes that reflects the will of the people and our association is committed to the welfare of all Liberians, and we stand as guardians of peaceful and violence-free elections”, he added.

Kamara further called on all eligible voters across the country to turn up on election day to vote. “I encourage everyone to stand up on election day, to exercise their fundamental right enshrined in Article 1 of the Liberian Constitution” All power is inherent in the people”.

Meanwhile, the Social Work president at the same time applauded the International Community, including ECOWAS, European Union, the US Embassy , the African Union and the security forces in Liberia for their unwavering support in promoting peace and democracy in Liberia.

Social Work Student Association (SOWKSA) is an organization operating at the University of Liberia. Its mission is to encourage professional development and social experience for social work majors and those interested in social justice. The organization also helps in promoting unity and fellowship among Students in the university. SOWKSA aims at providing training through leadership, administrative and membership responsibility, volunteering in the community amongst others.
