In Korea…Two Liberian Diplomats Get 9yrs Jail Sentence for Sexual Assault

Korea-April 5, 2023: A Court in Bussan, Korea has sentenced two Liberian Diplomats to Nine (9) years in prison for Sexual Assault.

Liberia Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Office (IMO) Moses Owen Browne and Daniel Tarr were found guilty of sexual assault and sentenced on April 5, 2023 at the hour of 2:00 p.m. (Korean Time), following the scheduled Verdict Hearing. Pureum Law Office, the Korean law firm hired by the Government of the Republic of Liberia to the Liberian Diplomats informed the Liberian maritime authority in Liberia.

“Following this conviction, the Court in Busan has consequently sentenced both Messrs. Moses Owen Browne and Daniel Tarr to serve prison terns of nine (9) years each”, a release from the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) noted .

The LiMA release added that under the Korea Laws, the court’s decision is subject to appeals within 7days, something the Liberian government hired Korea legal firm might consider.

“The Government of the Republic of Liberia, through LiMA, the Ministry of Foreign Afairs and the Ministry of Justice, has instructed its legal representation in Korea, Pureum Law Office, to furnish it with the various Appeal Options available to a criminal defendant under Korean Laws. Notwithstanding, it has been established that any appeal from such a verdict has to be exercised no later than seven (7) days following the rendition of the judgement. LİMA shall provide further infomation to the public once a decision is made regarding the issue of appeal”.

The release added that Families of Browne and Tarr have since been informed of the Korean Court’s Decision regarding the sentence. “The Government of Liberia intends to facilitate the visit to Busan, Korea, of at least one member of each family to ensure, inter alia, that contact between Messrs. Browne and Tarr and their respective families is maintained in the aftermath of the sentence. The Govenment of the Republic of Liberia shall continue to remain engaged with the Govemment of the Republic of Korea through official diplomatic channels to explore any and all options which may be available
to Messrs. Browne and Tarr”.

Brown and Tarr were in 2022 arrested for sexual assault against two under age children in Korea where they had gone to attend international meetings.

The duo had been under detention and going through court proceedings based on the crimes committed in Korea.
