WONGOSOL Inducts New Board Members

Monrovia, February 3,2024: The Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) recently swore into office a new Board of Directors to steer the affairs of the institution for the next two years.

The newly inducted board will play a crucial role in supervising WONGOSOL and collaborating with other network organizations and partners of the institution.

Those inducted on the Board are: Madam Facia B. Harris, Chairperson, (Paramount Young Women Initiative), Nelly Cooper 1st Vice Chairperson, (West Point Women), Victoria Torlo Koiquah 2nd Vice Chairperson, (PEACE- Liberia). Laura Bee Kiepo, Financial Secretary, (Women Empowerment Forum), and
Esther S. Davis Yango, Secretary, WONGOSOL Executive Director.

Others are Jannet O. Paye, Region 1 Coordinator, (Women Care Initiative), Kona Kollie, Region 2 Coordinator, )Young Liberian Women Organization for Improvement), Laura Targbeh Korvah, Region 3 Coordinator, (Young Women Political Council of Liberia) and Grace Scottland Brimah, Region 4 Coordinator, We4SELF).

The ceremony held on Friday, February 2, 2024 in Sinkor, brought together the institution’s network members, Women Legislative Caucus of Liveria , the National Elections Commission. Partners attending the ceremony include: UN Women Liberia , Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation, Actionaid , Democracy International , Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection – Liberia, National Civil Society Council of Liberia , Swedish Embassy among others.

Remarking at the event, the Country Representative of UN Women, Madam Comfort Lamptey, said is essential that the women of Liberia continue to work towards creating lasting positive change in the nation and the world at large.

Also, Bong County District #6 Representative, Moima Briggs Mensah pledged her commitment to collaborating with the women in eradicating child labor and female genital mutilation in Liberia.

Madam Mensah who is also the House of Representatives chair on Gender, stressed the need for responsible Authorities to ensure the protection of children. She highlighted advocacy and enforcing rule of law to punish those who perpetrate such crimes.

โ€œThe efforts to standardize the constitution and enforce laws to protect children from abuse and exploitation are crucial steps toward creating a safer and more supportive environment for the future generations of Liberia”.

Furthermore, Atty Facia B. Harris, Board Chair of WONGOSOL challenged the Board Members to keep advocating for women in Liberia. She urged her fellow board members to prioritize the interests of women across the country and to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s rights.

She caution them to not be deter by the challenges faced by women, but instead remain steadfast in the fight for their rights, in order to send a powerful message of resilient.

“It’s crucial for us to continue championing the cause of women’s empowerment and push for positive change in the face of adversities and barriers ” Madam Harris urged

โ€œThe collective efforts of WONGOSOL and its new board members, will lead to meaningful progress and tangible improvements in the lives of women in Liberia, if we remain transparent and accountable” she added.

Meanwhile, WONGOSOL recognized the outgoing board members, the institution’s General Assembly president, and vice president for their dedicated services to the organization and to the women they serve.

For the institution, it’s important to have strong leadership and dedicated individuals who are committed to advancing the rights and well-being of women. Therefore, WONGOSOL Executive Director Madam Esther Yango called on the new officers and board members to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to further the important work of WONGOSOL in the years to come.
