House To Ratify Financing Agreement For Women and Girls’ Empowerment

Capitol Hill, Monrovia, January 25,2023: The Plenary of the House of Representatives is expected to ratify a financing agreement seeking to ensure massive empowerment for women and girls across Liberia pending a report from its committees on Ways,Means and Finance, Gender and Judiciary.

The Financing agreement which was signed on July 4, 2022 was submitted by Pres. George Weah during Tuesday, January 24, 2023 sitting. The agreement is between the Republic of Liberia and International Development Association (IDA) .

According to the Pres. Weah’s communication, the Financing agreement is aimed at improving social services and livelihood for Women and girls within selected or targeted areas in order strengthen the Government’s own way of advancing women and girls’ empowerment.

Under the Agreement, the Association agrees to extend to the Republic of Liberia a Grant and a Credit, which are deemed as Concessional Financing in the following amounts: (a) an amount equivalent to Thirteen Million Three Hundred Thousand Special Drawing Rights (SDR 13,300,000 as Grant); and (b) an amount equivalent to Twenty Million Special Drawing Rights (SDR 20,000,000 as Credit).

The international Development Association played a greater role in helping countries grow and reduce poverty.

With IDA’s help, hundreds of millions of people have escaped poverty through the creation of jobs, access to clean water, schools, roads, nutrition, electricity, and more.

Following the reading of the Chief Executive Communication, Plenary voted to forward same to its committees on Ways and Means, Judiciary and Gender to report in 2weeks.
