Capitol Hill, Liberia: The Liberian Senate recently voted unanimously to reject Pres. George Weah’s nominee, Edwina Collins, for the post of Deputy Commissioner for International Vessel Registration at the Liberia Maritime Authority.

The Senate’s decision was prompted recently by a confirmation report submitted to the Senate’s Plenary by the Committee on Maritime by Grand Bassa County Senator, Jonathan Kaipay.

Sen. Kaipay in the Committee’s report recommended that the Senate reject Madam Edwina Collins confirmation based on her inexperience.

According to the Maritime Committee, nominee Collins perhaps has what the Senate termed as exuberance to serve her country but do not have the requisite qualification and experience to bring the programs of Maritime to National and International demands.

“Consistent with the constitutional mandate of confirmation under article 54 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, she does not have the requisite qualification and experience to bring the Maritime Program to meet National and International demands” The Senate Committee on Maritime report noted.

Recently, Madam Collins during her confirmation hearing, told the Senate Maritime Committee that she was an Intern with no prior knowledge and experience about Liberia’s Maritime program which according to the Committee does not qualify her to be a suitable candidate for the position.

The total of nineteen Senators voted to reject nominee Edwina Collins as Martime’s Deputy Commissioner for International Vessel Registration, one voted in favor and one abstained.

Madam Edwina Collins was recently nominated by President George Weah to the post of Deputy Commissioner for International Vessel Registration at the Liberia Maritime Authority.
