USA: Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, recently embarked on a highly productive series of international conferences, summits, and conventions in the United States, marked by significant achievements and strategic partnerships.

Her journey began at the Liberty Party Summit in Minnesota, where she was honored with an award for her outstanding work as President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate. This recognition highlights her impactful leadership and her commitment to advancing the legislative process in Liberia.

Following the summit, Senator Karnga-Lawrence attended the Democratic National Convention (DNC) 2024 in Chicago. She was amongst global political leaders from 96 countries invited by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) to attend the event.

Every four years, the NDI under its International Leaders Forum (ILF) brings together political leaders from around the globe and across the ideological spectrum, as well as members of the diplomatic corps, to gain insights into the US election campaign and to observe a key component of America’s democratic system.

At the event, she had the opportunity to witness inspiring speeches from prominent figures including former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, alongside current U.S President Joseph Biden and Vice President and Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. She observed from the crowd the powerful speech by Michelle Obama, which resonated deeply with her own dedication to public service.

A highlight of her visit was the formation of new international partnerships. Senator Karnga-Lawrence met with Peter Obi, former Presidential aspirant from Nigeria. Their discussions centered on shared visions for their countries, leading to Mr. Obi’s commitment to visiting Liberia to participate in youth mentoring programs.

Additionally, she engaged with Mrs. Kandia Camara, Senate Pro Tempore from Ivory Coast. Together, they planned an upcoming conference for Senate Pro Tempores across the region to enhance collaboration and contribute to the growth and development of their nations.

Senator Karnga-Lawrence also met with Winnie Kiiza, former Opposition Leader of the Ugandan Parliament. Their productive dialogue culminated in Ms. Kiiza’s promise to visit Liberia, further strengthening the network of female leaders in African politics.

Reflecting on her experiences, Senator Karnga-Lawrence stated, “The insights and partnerships I’ve gained during this trip are invaluable. They not only enrich our understanding but also ensure we are better equipped to lead our nation towards a more prosperous future.”

As Liberia continues on its path of democratic development, the alliances formed and lessons learned during this trip are set to play a pivotal role in shaping its future. Senator Karnga-Lawrence remains committed to her role as a servant leader, inspired by international models of effective governance and community engagement.
