Senate Confirms Public Works Minister Coker-Collins

Liberia: The  Plenary of the Liberian Senate has confirmed Madam Ruth Coker Collins as Minister of Public Works following the endorsement of a report from the Committee on Public Works and Rural Development.

It can be recalled on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the Senate Committee on Public Works and Rural Development recommended that the nominee for the post of Minister of Public Works be confirmed, but Plenary placed hold on her confirmation on grounds that the Committee failed to present performance report as part of the criteria endorsed by the Senate regarding nominees who have served and being re-nominated.

According to a release from the Press and Public Affairs Department of the Liberian Senate, the Plenary voted unanimously to confirm the Minister after several Senators acknowledged receipt of a performance report from the Committee on Public Works and Rural Development chaired by Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe.

During the confirmation hearing Madam Coker-Collins, many well-wishers indicated that the minister will deliver heavily on the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development, particularly on road connectivity.

Prior to her appointment, Minister Coker-Collins served in several capacities within the ministry before performing as acting Minister due to the death of Hon. Mobotu Vlah Nyepan in 2020.

In a related development, the Liberian Senate has, for the second time placed a “hold” on the confirmation of the Deputy Auditor General for Audit Services-Designate of the General Auditing Commission (GAC), Mr. Winsley S. Nanka.

The Senate decision was based on the failure of the Joint Committee on Autonomous Commission & Agencies and Public Accounts & Audits to submit performance report on the nominee.

Notwithstanding, the Committee has promised to provide performance report to Plenary for the nominee by Monday, June 27, 2022.
