Rep. Moima Briggs Mensah Donates 700kLD for Women Empowerment in Bong
Bong-: Representative Moima Briggs Mensah has made a significant contribution to women’s empowerment in District #6, Bong County. The Representative on August 7,2024 donated $700,000 Liberian Dollars and 100 plastic chairs to Women in Salala District. The donation was made during a citizen’s engagement tour. The Lawmaker’s tour also included the dedication of two market kitchens for women marketers at the Salala checkpoint.
During the engagement, Rep. Mensah emphasized that the donation is intended to improve the livelihoods of women in the Nyainforguelleh clan. “This initiative aims to empower the women of Salala District and enhance their quality of life,” she stated.
Madam Mensah highlighted the transformative impact of women’s empowerment in her district. According to her, it is about time people change the narrative of women not supporting women.
”In politics, there is a belief that women cannot empower each other, but today, the women of Salala have proven that they can”, she said.
She underscored the importance of self-independence for women, noting that empowerment means creating opportunities from limited resources.
The distribution of the funds will be organized by various zones within the clan, with LD 100,000 allocated to the Salala Iron Gate Women, LD 100,000 to the leadership of the New Life Community, and LD 5,000 to the Salala Nyainforguelleh clan. Additionally, the 100 plastic chairs will be available for rent at a nominal fee to generate revenue for the women.
Rep. Mensah also distributed LD 200,000 to local marketers as part of her empowerment initiative. “This contribution is a way of recognizing and supporting the hard work of market women in our community,” she said.
As the Chairman on Gender at the House of Representatives, Rep. Mensah expressed her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by market women particularly, the harsh conditions they endure while selling their goods.
”It is disheartening to see our women working in the rain and sun, which is why I felt compelled to take action,” she added.
Additionally, Rep. Mensah acknowledged the women of the Nyainforguelleh clan for their overwhelming support during the 2023 General Representatives and Presidential elections, which contributed to her electoral success.
On August 6, 2024, Rep. Mensah contiued her engagement with the residents of Boikai Town and the motorcyclists of Salala District. The citizens of BoikaiTown benefited from the construction of a town hall, while the Salala Motorcyclists Union received motorcycles along with ten head covers to enhance their operations.
Following the donation ceremony, the women of the Nyainforguelleh clan expressed their gratitude to Rep. Mensah for her support. Tenneh Francis, a leader among the women, praised the lawmaker’s efforts and pledged their unwavering support for her candidacy in the upcoming 2029 elections.
