Liberian Feminist Facia B. Harris to Receive US Honor

Liberia-WTVNEWS: Facia Boyenoh Harris,a Liberian Woman, has been selected this year along with eleven (11) other extraordinary women to be recognized at the U.S. Department of State’s International Women of Courage Awards on March 14.

Facia is a Liberian feminist and advocate who has over the more than 2 decades sustain her advocacy about equal rights and opportunities for women and girls across Liberia.

Her recognition is coming at the time she will be earning a Law Degree from the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia and the Celebration of International Women’s day.

“We are extremely excited to announce on International Women’s day that Ms. Facia Boyenoh Harris will be one of twelve extraordinary women from around the world to to be recognized at the U.S. Department of State’s International Women of Courage Awards on March 14”, US embassy statement noted.

According to the statement, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will host the annual awards in a virtual ceremony at the U.S. Department of State while First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, will deliver remarks in recognition of the courageous accomplishments of this yearโ€™s IWOC awardees.

Ms. Harris, an alumna of Embassy Monrovia’s Community Solutions Program, is the first Liberian ever to be recognized for this award.

Ms. Harris is a life-long activist for womenโ€™s rights and against gender-based violence in Liberia. As a co-founder of the Paramount Young Women Initiative, she has worked for decades to address the pervasive sexual assault and harassment of school-aged girls, create opportunities for education, and provide leadership training for the next generation of female leaders. She is also a community organizer, from co-founding the Liberian Feminist Forum to facilitating coordination among female advocacy groups to fostering neighborhood activism, where she organizes groups on issues as wide-ranging as political participation, sanitation, and rape. Currently, Ms. Harris is the Director for Outreach and Sensitization of Liberiaโ€™s Freedom of Information Act-enforcing Independent Information Commission.
